Bodily Autonomy

Debunking Pro-Abortion Arguments: My Body, My Choice

Terminology

  • Bodily Autonomy

the right to govern our own bodies

  • Free Will

“the power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one's own discretion.” (Oxford Languages Dictionary)

  • Pregnancy

Involving the life of two human beings: a mother and a child

Examples/Analogies

When One Can Practice Bodily Autonomy

  • One can eat or drink whatever you want
  • One may choose to remove their own appendix; although it may not be the best decision, since you’re the only one who it is affecting you’re allowed to make it on the basis of your own free will

When One Cannot Practice Bodily Autonomy

  • If it’s my body, then I can punch the person next to me.
  • When an act harms, endangers, or purposefully ends the life of another innocent human being
    • Why is it so horrifying when a pregnant woman intentionally takes drugs or drinks alcohol? It’s her body, her choice right? Anyone knows it’s wrong because it could be harming the preborn and cause deformities.
      • So if it’s not okay to intentionally harm the baby with drugs and alcohol, then why is it okay to full on murder the baby instead?

Pro-Life Arguments

  • As pro-lifers, we support people making many choices for themselves and having bodily autonomy
    • One may choose to remove their own appendix; although it may not be the best decision, since you’re the only one who it is affecting you’re allowed to make it on the basis of your own free will
  • This logic on its own is completely rational, but it loses all credibility when another innocent party is involved and applied to a pregnancy.
  • What the “My body my choice” argument fails to recognize is that the preborn child is a separate individual with his own bodily autonomy and individual rights.

Questions to Ask people who support AB0RTION

Since you believe it’s a woman’s body, a woman’s choice…

  • is a fetus literally a part of a woman's body like an organ is?
  • if a mother is pregnant with a boy, does that mean the mother has male genitalia?
  • why is it not okay for a pregnant woman to drink or smoke while she is pregnant?
  • why is the slaughter of a pregnant mother count as a double homicide?
  • why does the a baby’s life end in an abortion but not her mother's?
  • can a woman have an abortion 5 minutes before birth?
  • Why do you consider the preborn baby to be a part of the women’s body?
